Confident woman with long dark hair wearing a denim shirt.Where is the best place to live if I want to be a professional actor?

While high-quality video auditions have made it possible to audition from anywhere, the best place to live is in a production-heavy state with strong film tax incentives, such as Georgia, Louisiana, New Mexico, or Texas. Producers prioritize “Local Hires” to maximize tax credits and eliminate travel and lodging costs. Consequently, while you no longer must live in Los Angeles or New York to be seen, residing in a state with a thriving film economy significantly increases your chances of booking larger, SAG-qualified roles.

One of the most common questions I get from new actors at Theresa Bell Actors Studio is: “Which state is best for work?” The answer has shifted dramatically over the last 15 years. While L.A. and New York used to be the only gates to the industry, technology and tax incentives have busted the doors wide open for everyone.

The Rise of the Video Audition

As recently as 2022, I didn’t have a single in-person audition. Technology and the shift in industry norms have made it possible for an actor in a small town to submit a professional self-tape and be considered for major network projects. This “leveling of the playing field” means your location is no longer a barrier to being seen—but it still matters for being hired.

Why “Local Hire” is the Industry Standard

If anyone can tape from anywhere, why move? The answer lies in Film Tax Incentives. States like New Mexico and Louisiana offer massive tax breaks to productions that hire residents who pay taxes in that state. For a producer, hiring a “Local Hire” means:

  • Maximized Incentives: Accessing the full funding and rebates offered by the state.
  • Reduced Overhead: No need to pay for actor travel, hotels, or daily stipends (per diem).
  • Logistical Reliability: Increased confidence that the actor is nearby and ready to be on set.

Strategic Markets: Moving Where the Work Is

Because of these incentives, production hubs have exploded in states like Georgia, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. I personally moved to New Mexico to take advantage of this “bigger and better” work. If you look at casting breakdowns on Actors Access or Casting Networks, you will frequently see the phrase “LOCAL HIRE ONLY.” To be competitive for these roles, you need to be a resident.
